In a Montessori classroom, no one is studying the same thing at one time. We have a mixed age group (6-9 years) with extreme levels of ability. My students are inquisitive with a large range of interests. My children love story telling, which is integrated into all areas of curriculum to spark interest. They enjoy searching for answers to their questions, and have a glow about them when sharing their discoveries other class members. Areas of our study include: astronomy, physical science, botany, zoology, anatomy, and chemistry. Other curriculum areas are housed in neighboring Montessori classrooms. Shelves contain lessons based on observation's of the children's needs and interests. Students have the freedom of choice (within limits) to work on lessons that inspire and fulfill their needs. Our school is a low-income school with 80% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. It is unique in the fact it is a K3-8th grade school. Our school has a wonderful morale that puts students' needs first.
My Project
Practical life lessons are extremely loved in our classroom. We learn punch-out lessons, ironing, basket weaving, and now sewing. My students sewed their own holiday stocking before winter break. A few students finished and enjoyed it so much, they made stockings as gifts!
Now, they will learn to sew their own personalized pillow!
Students will measure and cut the fabric in the shape of the letter of their first, middle, or last name. They will then sew these two pieces together, turn them inside out, stuff the pillow, then completely stitch the pillow together. Some students may even choose to make a pillow for a friend or family member as a gift.
We have the needles and thread to make our next project possible. We only need fabric and poly-fil to begin our next sewing extravaganza!
