Personal Pages: Artists' Journals for My Students

My students need personal journals/sketchbooks that they can make and decorate themselves to inspire their writing and drawing.

My Students

My art students are enthusiastic and creative and above all they are expressive. I am always looking for opportunities where they can creatively articulate themselves through writing and drawing.

I teach at a Title One urban school where budget cuts and testing are an every day reality for my students.

It is important to me that the art room is where students have the freedom to express their feelings and where all students can excel. I read to my students a lot to expose them to different authors and illustrators. Now it's my students' turn to be writers and illustrators.

My Project

I am requesting artist journals/sketchbooks for every student in my school. I want this year to be the school year where my art students learn how to create and keep a personal journal. Each student would have the opportunity to make his or her own journal and create a personalized cover. After that, the sky's the limit for my students. Because I am the art teacher I teach every student in the school. We have so many amazing students in our school from pre-k through 7th grade, including students with autism. Every one of these students has amazing stories to tell and I want them to be inspired to write about themselves in their journals.

This project is so important to my students because my students need to write, write, and write some more.

It's important to learn how to write a good paragraph in class but it is also important for my students to write about things that they value. Through this process, I want them to learn to love writing. I want my students to start a school wide writing revolution! I know they will be inspired if they have amazing writing journals they made themselves and that are theirs to keep.
