My Students

Common Core (CCSS) for second grade focus on the writing process as the primary tool to help children become independent writers. Currently, my students will pre-write, draft, revise, edit and publish their stories in a very traditional way, with paper and pencil.

Using the writing process the students in my classroom will create small moment stories.

These stories are personal narratives that zoom in on the exact details of a moment in order to tell ordinary stories in meaningful ways. It is important for children to see that their lives are full of stories and that they can be successful writers and illustrators. Storytelling is the strategy not only to develop and strengthen oral language proficiency, but also provide opportunities for children to increase writing proficiency and eventually become independent writers. The CCSS calls for second graders to tell stories with appropriate facts and relevant descriptive details. Additionally, the CCSS require students to use a variety of digital tools to produce, write and publish their work. With the use of technology, my students can become Digital Storytellers and bring their small moment narratives to life, by adding audio recordings & visual displays to their digi stories.

My Project

Digital Storytelling can engage all types of learners. Students who are frustrated by simply sitting with pencil and paper can now use technology to explore an unlimited number of ways to express themselves and grow as writers and storytellers. I want my students to be able to sit in the directors chair as they write, illustrate and collect images for their stories. Digital stories: foster critical thinking skills, encourage students to write and work at becoming better writers, give students a voice, empower students to share about themselves, encourage creativity, and build communication skills. All types of learners will be successful writers and illustrators!

I want my students see their stories come alive as they narrate their stories and select music to match the feelings of their projects.

The impact of these digital stories will foster collaboration and teamwork as the children exchange ideas and suggestions, peer edit and coach. Digital storytelling will also build community when shared with each other, families and the school community as a whole. Completed projects can become inspirations for other young writers and illustrators.
