My Students

My students have stories to tell! It is my job to teach them that art is a form of communication and that the visual arts and literacy skills go hand and hand. I want all my students to make the connection between visual literacy and writing.

I work in an inner city school in Baltimore City.

My students are enthusiastic and creative but this is only the second year they have had an art teacher. Last year I noticed that some of the students who struggled academically really excelled in my art class. I am a real proponent of art integration and have been taking arts integration classes over the summer. It is my goal to improve my students literacy skills by teaching them how to keep an art journal. I know my students will be motivated and inspired when they get their own sketchbooks at the beginning of the school year. By the end of the school year they will have learned skills that they can use in years to come. The art journals will also illustrate their growth over the school year. It is important to me as a teacher to have a personal relationship with my students. I can better communicate with my students by reading their journal entries and personally responding to them in their journals.

My Project

I am requesting bookmaking kits so every student in my 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade art classes will be able to make and decorate their own art journal at the beginning of the school year. Each art class will start with a very short drawing and writing assignment. I have observed that students are more willing to write if they have created the image first. Even reluctant writers are more invested. Every art class will end with the students writing a comment in their sketchbook about our project or asking me a question. I think it is a very important skill for students to be able to formulate questions about what they are learning. By reading their comments and questions and responding in their art journals I will be able maintain a personal relationship with my students. I have fairly large art classes and being able to communicant with each student in the art class is a real plus. Reading their comments and questions will also enable me to let the students guide my teaching.

The donation of art journals for every child in my 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade art classes will have a broad impact on my art students.

It will enable me to integrate literacy skills with art in my classroom. Keeping a personal art journal will motivate my students not only to write more but will teach problem solving and visual thinking skills. My students, who often don't have any school supplies, will be thrilled to have a book at the end of the school year that is about them and by them.
