Personal Hygiene; Keeps the Odors to a Minimum for Teens
Help me give my students what they need for personal hygiene. Tampons are a luxury for most of these students and being a poverty stricken community, they don't always have enough money to buy their own.

My Project
As a High School Nurse, I get calls about my students from concerned teachers when an individual is experiencing foul body odor. Odors can come from anywhere on the body, but in adolescent years, their pubescent odors are strong, offensive and can make or break teen relationships. My goal for this project is that my students have successful teen-to-teen interactions, without the distraction of body odor. Bullying and isolation can take place during these puberty stricken years if not addressed. The importance of brushing their teeth, using deodorant, bathing regularly and using proper sanitary napkins, can all play a part in their self-esteem levels.
The importance of peer-to-peer connections during their high school years, some would say, is the most valuable tool one can rely on and take away from their academic success.
When a student smells from body odor, I hear about it often, either from other students or concerned teachers. I have asked for toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and sanitary supplies for females to ensure that this nurses' office is more equipped to help these poverty stricken families feel more supported, while here at school.
Education is provided, gently to the student, about proper hygiene when they are sent to me for their foul odor. Some of these students are not close with their parents to have these conversations. I feel that it is in my scope of practice and years of health and well-being education, to ensure that the students at my high school can avoid malodorous interactions with one another, therefore lifting their self-esteem.
