Personal Foul In Ender's Game

My students need 70 copies of the novel, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. This would be enough for two class sets to be shared with the other 7th grade ELA teacher.

My Students

Getting middle schoolers to read can be a challenge, but students with a limited world-view, in rural NC, is even more difficult. The one novel I can tell my current students that my former students adored is Ender's Game. In fact, the novels have been loved nearly to death.

Our minority populations make up more than 50% of our demographic with more than 80% of the children on free and/or reduced lunch.

Finding a novel that is universally enjoyed is very tough. We have had two complete class sets of this book. However, over the years, we are down to only 50 copies, most of which are missing the cover and some pages. While the students are listening to the audio version of the book, reading along is extremely helpful with reading fluency. There are two ELA teachers in my grade. So, we were having to share 50 of these amazing novels. My students are excited about reading, some of them for the first time, but sharing books is not always the best way to learn, especially with such a diverse population and reading levels as varied as ours. Having two full sets of novels helped the reading of this novel continue more smoothly allowing for better reading fluency.

My Project

Our students will be using the class sets of Ender's Game for a novel study. Your thoughtful donations will not only realize two full sets of books for our students, but also help to learn a priceless life lesson about kids' making a difference even on a world-scale, overcoming adversity, doing well and doing good in the world. My students are at an impressionable age where these lessons could stay with them for the rest of their lives. They love this book. I want them all to have access to it.

My students do not have an easy life in rural NC, so they can relate to Andrew Wiggin and Ender's Game.

He knows that he has to rely on his wits and "street" savvy. He also knows that he can count on his friends and that is about all my students have, too. As a "third," an exception to the two-child restriction, Ender is looked down upon and bullied for being different. Many of my students are the children of immigrants, treated by some as second class citizens and can easily relate.
