Persepolis in the Classroom

My students need paper, as well as a set of 34 copies of "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood", by Marjane Satrapi.

My Students

"Persepolis" will be our first-ever graphic novel. The book will entice both advanced readers as well as encourage struggling readers. Each of my English I classes have a variety of learning levels, and this set of books will help students follow the story and engage with the text.

I have about 100 students in three classes.

They are outgoing, excited about high school, and love to write. However, many are struggling readers. Our goal this year is to have every student gain at least two years of reading growth before moving on to the 10th grade.

My Project

My students love reading and writing about non-fiction because they can easily relate it to their lives. With a classroom set of "Persepolis" the class will be able to read a story of a girl struggling in Iran. This book will foster conversations on tolerance and open-mindedness and help students work on their own non-fiction writing as they relate to the novel. We need paper to create our writings on, as well.

As a teacher in her first year, I don't have a classroom set of books, as of yet.

I'm hoping that with this class set of "Persepolis" students will each get their own copy and dive into the story!
