My students need a teaching artist to utilize acting, movement, voice, and playwriting techniques, to support the development of social/emotional life skills such as communication, problem solving, collaboration, and creative expression.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an enthusiastic bunch who are motivated to do their best. They love to learn, but many of them face plenty of challenges. The majority of them are second language learners, and many come from impoverished backgrounds.
Our neighborhood is an economically depressed area.
Many students have witnessed violence, and some have even lost loved ones to violence. Our school is in dire need of repairs. Most of my students do not have the opportunity to experience the world outside of our neighborhood.
My Project
The performing arts can profoundly impact a child's life. The workshops support the development of social/emotional skills such as communication, problem solving, collaboration, and creative expression.
Stories will come to life using sound, music, improvisation, and the classroom will turn into a living theater.
This workshop introduces students to theater and helps develop literacy and communication skills in an artistic environment.
Students will learn and apply basic theater vocabulary, skills, and knowledge through various forms of creative expression, and practice empathy and self-reflection while exploring themes such as courage, honesty, bullying, and friendship found in the text. They will also develop skills necessary to theatrically adapt stories, originate ideas, develop characters, and create a performance through improvisation, collaboration, and group work.
