This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine not having the opportunity to express yourself creatively because the availability of art supplies was limited. I don't want my students to be limited anymore.
My sixth graders attend a Title I school in California.
The majority of my class is socioeconomically disadvantaged. I have 37 students in my class, so getting supplies for all of them is difficult especially with my staggering number of pupils. They have limited resources as home as well, and very few have any experience with using pastel chalk.
My Project
I'd love to be able to share the suppleness of pastel chalk with my students. Anyone who has used pastels can tell you that holding a pastel in your hand and then gliding it across paper is truly a magical experience. It is soft and has the most delicate color when put on black construction paper.
If I were to receive these supplies, my students would gain so much. In particular, they would experience drawing with pastels. Very few of them even know what pastels are, let alone have used them. Second, they would get to use these pastels to recreate famous works of art. They'd be learning about the great artists who have come and gone. It would be an enriching art project for them.
This project would help my students have another outlet to express themselves.
It would also be a project that would go across disciplines and help them better understand the artists from certain poignant periods in history.
