My Students
"Education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual. It is acquired not by listening to words, but by experiences upon the environment." - Maria Montessori
Each morning I welcome 27 curious, little learners into my mixed-age 3-6-year-old Montessori classroom: 9 three-year-olds, 9 four-year-olds, and 9 kindergartners.
This lively bunch spends their day learning through the use of hands-on Montessori materials in the different areas of our classroom, including Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, Language, Writing, Science, Art, Cultural, and Peace. Our school provides young children with a variety of experiences to build a foundation for success and learning.
I am proud to work in a school that values diversity and equality. The children in my classroom are racially, religiously, and socioeconomically diverse. Every child in our school receives free meals and snack. We are proud to be able to provide a Montessori learning environment for children who would not otherwise have access to this type of education.
My Project
Young children are hands-on learners. They need concrete and sensory-integrated learning experiences in order to thrive. Preschool and kindergarten teachers have gifted the difficult task of teaching young children how to form letters and begin the lifetime development of handwriting. Due to lack of resources, many teachers are driven towards using handwriting sheets, rather than following the developmental progression of writing large letters to write small letters.
The purchase of handwriting chalkboards would give my P4 and K children developmentally appropriate opportunities to practice their letter formation and handwriting.
A full set of chalkboards would allow for whole group teaching of letter formation and handwriting. Writing with chalk on chalkboards gives young children the necessary sensory feedback to learn to handwrite properly and confidently!
