My Students

My class is made up of twenty-four energetic six and seven year olds. They are inquisitive and eager to learn. First grade is a year of enormous growth, especially in the areas of reading and math. Most of my students are living in poverty, in unstable often chaotic situations. They are living in an under served community which often doesn't provide them with the same opportunities and experiences as others. Our school's resources are limited, providing us with only the basics. I am trying to make up for these deficits by providing a safe, nurturing, engaging space in which to learn.

My Project

We are trying to prepare our students for the 21st century, and are increasingly using technology, such as iPads in the classroom. With twenty-four students in the room, they must do their independent work with headphones on. Unfortunately, while our school provides a tablet for each student, they only provide earbuds, which do not fit properly, or comfortably in their little ears. Their discomfort causes distractions and lack of focus on the lessons. Also, they are constantly becoming tangled or broken. Comfortable, sturdy earphones will allow my students to stay on task and fully engaged in the learning. These sturdy headphones will also provide the same opportunities for future students in my classroom.
