My Project

I'm getting a fifth-grade math class next year, and I'm SO excited! I've been working as a math coach with small groups, but now I'll have my own class of fifth graders every day for math. These kids are going to be incredible - fifth graders ask the best "what if" questions, they're not afraid to try new strategies, and they get genuinely excited when math finally clicks. I'm starting completely fresh with building our classroom community, and I really want every single kid to feel like they belong from day one.

What I've learned as a math coach is that my students all have different learning and physical needs, and when I honor those differences, amazing things happen.

Some of my future students will need to move around to focus - their brains work better when their bodies are active. Others have physical needs that require back support or need to stretch out to be comfortable. I have kids who think more clearly when they're close to the ground, and others who need a quiet, cozy spot to process new concepts. Some students have sensory needs that are better met with soft seating.

The flexible seating will let me honor all these different needs. The stadium seats will be perfect for math discussions where everyone can see each other. The floor cushions will support students who learn best closer to the ground. The bean bag chairs will become safe spaces for kids who have sensory needs or prefer independent work. The gaming chairs will give students who need structured support a comfortable place to collaborate.

When students feel physically comfortable and know their differences are celebrated, they can put all their energy into becoming confident mathematicians.
