In the light of recent tragic events, my students bring about hope for a better future. While they hail from all over the globe, speak a multitude of different languages, and come from a wide array of economic situations, they work together in unity. Through playing in a band together, they learn the values of teamwork, tolerance, understanding, and loyalty. We see our wonderful diversity as an asset and a strength. I can only hope that they can carry this notion of setting aside differences to achieve unity into the future.

My Project
Deep down everyone wants to be a rock star! When my students enter the band room for the first time, many of them choose to play percussion because they want to emulate their favorite rock stars. Before long, my students begin to realize that learning drums is but a small fraction of what percussionists do.
Percussion instruments not only provide a beat, but also add many bold and vibrant colors to the sound of our band.
Our percussionists learn to play everything from snare drum to timpani, triangle to xylophone. Learning mallet percussion instruments, such as glockenspiel and xylophone poses a unique challenge to my students, as the instruments are too large to take home. The small, portable bell kits and mallets will allow my aspiring percussionists to practice at home so that they can achieve their potential as musicians. My percussionists are dedicated and energetic but are often frustrated that they share four practice bell kits between 24 students. Funding this project will allow more of my students the opportunity to practice at home. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
