Percussion for the World

My students need several new percussion instruments for our upcoming world music unit and mallets for our recently-donated xylophones.

My Students

When you think of world music, what comes to mind? Exotic rhythms, singing, movement, emotion, and especially drums and percussion. I want my students to learn several kinds of world music, and for that we need authentic instruments.

We are a public, all-girls school in a large urban area.

We are very lucky to have access to excellent cultural opportunities, and my students are eager to re-create in the classroom what they hear in their world. They are growing into little musicians! They sing with beauty and enthusiasm, they are rhythmically adept, and they love to learn about and perform music from all around the world.

My Project

My students will learn to sing, perform, and appreciate several types of world music in an upcoming unit. Although we have high-quality recordings to listen to, we do not have the most authentic instruments to accompany them. It would enrich their experience and create an authentic ensemble if we could play the instruments they hear on the CDs. They will learn to identify the sounds and names of the instruments and play characteristic rhythmic patterns in the salsa style, in African music, East Asian, and jazz. We will also get to add xylophone accompaniment by using the new mallets.

These instruments and mallets will allow my students to have an authentic music-making experience.

Each type of world music has its own set of specific instruments and rhythms, and my students deserve the chance to explore another culture in this way. Please help us make music around the world!
