This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school band is in need of some percussion instruments that will allow our students to learn to read music, develop their rhythmic skills, and fill out the sound of the percussion section.

Our students come from a low income area in New York City.

They are in middle school. They haven't had a consistent music education and are in dire need of some music and art in their lives in order to provide them with a positive outlet to express themselves. We have a high immigrant population with many talents that need developing.

My Project

The marimba and xylophone along with the mallets will make learning to read and perform music accessible to the students in our band and in the music classes. They will have fun learning the rhythmic music that we have picked out. We are planning on doing several shows this year that require a strong percussion section such as "Footloose" and "Little Shop of Horrors" along with other excerpts and songs from other shows. They really get excited doing popular, contemporary music and musical theater numbers. We also perform easier classical repertoire. The instruments will provide us with the means to play more music that is written for full band and percussion ensembles.

Being involved in the music department at our school is one of the only ways many of our students have of learning positive avenues to express themselves.

It is so important that we provide them with equipment so that they will be able to learn to play music and be part of a musical group. It is a way that we can provide them hope for a better life as productive,positive members of our society.
