Peppy Percussion!

Help me give my students percussion like a Tamani talking drum that has the ability to change pitch when the sides are squeezed.

My Students

I am a classically-trained musician, and have been performing for 20 years; this year I decided to try teaching elementary music in a local public school, and I've fallen in love.

My students are learning that they are good at making music, and that doing so is very theraputic.

I am building a music program from the ground up; there has not been a strong tradition of music-making until now. With the help of Little Kids Rock, I have been able to provide instruction on ukuleles, keyboards, guitars, and hip-hop techniques. Over the past four months, I have witnessed the surliest, most difficult-to-reach students slowly blossom and allow themselves to come under the spell of music.

It is important to mention that our school serves some of the poorest families in our city; we receive the most Title I funding out of any school in our district. Our students face issues that require great strength on their part. I am so proud of them; they're actually teaching me a lot more than I believe I'm teaching them. I get so many hugs every day that I've lost count. I love them, and I want all the best for them.

My Project

Percussion is the focus of this project! Boomwhackers, a cajon, and a talking drum will take my music classes to the next level.

My students are finally reading rhythms, and are ready to move to more quality instruments.

We currently play makeshift drums made from cafeteria cans, which are fantastic--but boomwhackers will add the element of pitch to the rhythms we are reading, and boost us to reading pitches on the treble staff.

The cajon will serve as a bass/snare combo as we ramp up our modern band program. A full drum set isn't practical for our current level, but the cajon is easy to move and play. I'm looking forward to teaching backbeat rhythm using this instrument.

The African talking drum will add a fun option to our library of sounds; squeezing the sides of the drum as you hold it under your arm bends the pitch of the drum. It can sound like it's asking a question, or agreeing pleasantly with your musical phrase.
