Two years of growth in reading in 1 school year! My students need your help to reach their ambitious reading growth goal. I teach reading, math, writing, science and social studies to special education students in grades 5, 6 and 7 in a high-needs middle school in Philadelphia.

In September my special education students had difficulty in identifying the sounds of letters. I saw a lot of eyes roll when I introduced them to their big goal of 2 years grade growth in Reading and Math. Since September these 5th, 6th and 7th grade boys have seen what they can do and have put forth great effort to achieve success and now our class average reading level is at 1.9. They've worked very hard but still have a long way to go to reach their goal. Each student reads at home by borrowing from our growing classroom library, but the books are hard to search through as they sit in milk crates on the floor in the back of the classroom.

These boys will achieve success with a little help from you. If we had a proper reading nook in the classroom it'll help foster their fledgling interest in reading. With a couple of bookcases and a comfortable place to sit or lay on the floor, students will begin to love silent sustained reading time in class. My students have begun to enjoy reading but to achieve success of their goal they need to love reading.

My young men have worked hard to achieve academic success and need just a little bit of a push to send them soaring. While their academic goal is to gain two years of reading growth, in reality the ability to read on a second and third grade level will enable them to function more independently and allow them to practice the skills they've been learning. With your help my students will have a more positive learning environment.
