Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach US History and Government preparing students for college writing, state exams and more importantly future community activists and leaders. Builders not destroyers. My students are juniors which is the most important academic year of their high school tenure. All of my students are from a high need community and a solution of a large school with failing grades and low graduation and college matriculation rates.
My students are motivated by social justice and social movements. They read more when the issues in history affect them and their community. The People's Voice presents these stories through speeches and other primary sources that most students have difficulty understanding. Using this book along with our already donated Zinn's People's History of the United States, our students practice with primary sources and take part in speech readings and performances.
People's Voice by Zinn will give students much needed practice on primary sources for college research preparation. Speech reading and performances will increase students' confidence levels by presenting more in class and public. The People's Voice by Zinn also includes web site support with live readings by Hollywood actors and actresses that students can replicated and discuss.
Your donation will allow me as a teacher to provide students with primary source readings, speeches that will empower them and an opportunity for them to become better researchers, readers and college ready.
