This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are Special Education, ESL, and low performing inner city kids. Many of our families live well below the poverty line with few resources in their houses and technology access is a struggle for our families.
This is their last year in middle school before they embark on their high school and college journey.
I’ve been with these students since sixth grade. We experienced COVID shut downs, on line and in person learning. Despite these hurdles, my students have shined! We have worked hard over the past couple of years to pursue greatness! As a result, some of my students were interviewed by NYC former’s mayor, awarded debate achievements from the NYC Chancellor and were granted scholarships for prep with the Specialized High School Exams.
I know academically they will do well - we worked hard on that. Our recent data from state tests show that this class outperformed the city average by 7%, which is a great accomplishment since we are considered low performing inner city kids. However, as my students go on high school and job interviews, I want them to be just as successful. We all know first impressions are everything. With all the pressure on students to learn, they need tools to be successful in and out of school. I am requesting planners and professional notebooks that will provide my students with a structure that contributes to their success.
I can’t be with them when they embark on these new experiences but I can help them by providing the tools to be successful. Tools like a planner and a professional notebook can help them plan, organize and keep track of their work and provide them with a structure that contributes to their success. I feel so strongly that my kids deserve a fighting chance.
Success comes with hard work and long-term commitment.
