In my small rural district in southwest Mississippi, we believe in looking ahead to the future. I teach junior high science to kids that mostly come from low-income households that struggle to make ends meet in today's tough economic times. Unfortunately, it is too often the basics in school supplies that gets pushed to the back burner in a household that is juggling bills every month.

What I am trying to obtain is basic classroom supplies: pencils, erasers, and pens. We do a lot of writing in my class - from essays to taking notes to writing "thank you" messages to wonderful donors such as yourself. To do this, each child needs to know that the necessary writing utensils are on hand and ready to go.

Simple #2 pencils are necessary for our mandated state tests. Being junior high students, there is a frequent "changing of the mind" when writing, so erasers are also a necessary component of classroom supplies. As the students continue on their journey toward high school and graduation, they also have to master the art of writing with a pen. That's hard to do when there are no pens available with which to practice writing.

Your generous gift of these basic supplies to my students will get us one step closer to success in our academic studies. With your contribution, a child can be assured of having the basic supplies on hand when it is time to write that report, work those problems on density and velocity, and draw those diagrams of cell structure.
