My students need penmanship supplies - pens designed specifically for stylized, hand-formed lettering, drawing/graph paper, paint markers, and a LED tracing light pad. A projection camera connected to the teacher computer will allow for class-wide viewing for demonstration and step-by-step instruction. Video software included with the camera can record steps allowing me (the teacher) to play back the recorded steps and assist any students needing help.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Art classes are full of anticipation, trepidation, adventure and surprise. Students are introduced to projects that allow for both creative exploration and skill development. At the end of this specific project, I'd like for my students to have improved handwriting skills, hopefully allowing for more personal flair and expression.
My students come from mostly working-class, first and second-generation Latino families.
My school is completely immersed in and enhanced by the surrounding community. Families are deeply involved in almost every aspect of the school on a daily basis and strive to keep the students and their educational development a top priority.
Most of my students start off either in Pre-K or Kindergarten, so by the time they leave for middle school I have seen a majority of their development educationally, socially, and academically. The initial wonder they have in the Art room becomes even more so as they develop their motor skills and realize more and more how to use the different tools Art class offers them.
Handwriting remains one of the main features of establishing a student's identity - not just on their work paper, but in ownership of what they create. There has been a focus on writing over the past few years, and I have had several projects utilize those skills.
My Project
The brush pens I am requesting will allow for more of a smooth, painterly approach to handwriting. Students will develop better concentration and patience as they work on individual letter forms. The paper I have selected is the perfect medium between pencil, pen, marker and paint. An "all purpose" paper can allow for mistakes without being regarded as a loss of material as "practice makes perfect." The different pen tip sizes allow for more variation and provide more tools for penmanship experimentation.
Handwriting motor skill development will improve as their artistic creativity becomes more attuned with their ability; personal character traits in terms of identity through "artistic creative writing" will allow for improved cursive penmanship.
Basics in letter forms with black ink on white paper start as the launching pad into more involved artistic penmanship, and the inclusion of color will enhance that path with more possible visual expression.
The ability to write with a distinctive hand lettering style has been a traditional benchmark students the world over have learned and carried into adulthood; writing in a personal style that confers not just communication but establishes an individual's presence upon its viewing, solidifies one's place in the world. Whether the written word is a professional letter, or a personal note of deep importance, penmanship continues to be a relevant part of our culture. Student pride is as important.
