My Students

Reading Workshop is a pivotal part of our school day. My third graders read their independent 'just right' books after learning a new strategy that will cultivate their reading lives. They are all avid readers, who are in need of new and engaging nonfiction books at their level.

My third graders are in a Reading and Writing Project School, which cultivates self-directed learners to critically think and meaningfully engage with the learning process.

At the heart of the workshop model is a leveled library of books in various genres. My class consists of young readers from level F through Q, who have a natural propensity for nonfiction literature. Unfortunately, my current collection of nonfiction books is limited in number and engaging topics, according to each student's reading level.

My Project

A comprehensive nonfiction library will provide the necessary books for our upcoming nonfiction unit. When matched with that perfect book, it is amazing to see my third graders' natural inquisitiveness soar. Informational texts on a variety of scientific and historical topics-- polar bears, penguins, the earth's biomes, and the Liberty Bell, just to name a few-- will satiate my students' curiosities. I envision the books to be organized in nonfiction text sets so that my students can delve deeper into a topic. Students will then transfer their brand new wealth of knowledge into their very own information book.

Authoring an original book is a mighty task for any writer.

Studying the work of professional authors will well-prepare my students for the upcoming nonfiction unit. With your partnership, I can provide my students with a collection of nonfiction text sets in order to more meaningfully engage and write about a topic of their genuine interest.
