This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With the growing constraints being placed on our public services, the budget for public school is shrinking. It is difficult to learn, if you lack basic materials for daily activities.
I work in a Turnaround school which was identified 3 years ago as "under-performing" and new staff and a new principal were brought in.
As a school we have been working really hard to make sure that we are providing the best education possible to our students. Our school population is 94% below the poverty line, and 85% non-native English speakers. We have a high occurrence of single-family homes, families on welfare, illegal residents, families in shelters or receiving other societal supports. Despite all this, our students are incredible! They come to school excited, and ready to learn. My students this year have been learning quickly, despite the challenges we face.
My Project
My students need glue, scissors, transparent and highlighter tape, pencils, pointers and storage boxes to help keep an organized and smooth-running learning space! I am sure that asking for things like glue and pencils isn't that inspiring, but honestly, these are the things we need right now. Our school budget is very small, and we are running out of money for even the most basic of resources. We have been making due with the short ends of pencils that usually get thrown away, reusing tape by sticking it to the board, and using a broken dowel as a pointer. With these resources, less of our time can be spent scavenging for what's missing, and instead be spent on learning!
First grade may sound "fun" and "cute," but the truth is that it is hard work, for teachers and students alike.
We have so many gains to make in math, writing and reading... all the while building their confidence, sense-of-self, and opening their mind to the possibilities in the world. The lack of resources can get in the way of all that we need to accomplish. With these materials, I will always know we have what we need without going to look for it.
