This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We don't need a laptop, or a fancy projector. Our need is simple; we need pencils! To get down to the business of learning, my students needs reliable pencils with which to complete their assignments and lab investigations.
My junior scientists are my life.
I have served nearly 900 Title-1 students at a Pre-K-4th grade public elementary school in an urban area of Texas since I arrived with Teach for America in 2006. My students hail from all parts of the globe; our student body is a special mix of African-American, African, Latino, Southeast and Pacific Asian students who are eager to learn.
Our population is identified as being "high-risk" due in part to the fact that over 80% of students receive free lunch. With this being the case, often students don't come to school with all of the correct school supplies, if they are able to bring any at all.
My Project
When teachers need something they don't have, we get creative. First we buy it ourselves, but that does get expensive. My husband can attest to the fact that we've purchased hundreds of pencils for my lab. On standardized test days, when everyone needs pencils, I've been known to cut pink erasers into 8 pieces, and break new pencils with the paper-cutter to create 2 small pencils. It's all silly when you think about it, but we've got to do what we've got to do to teach our kiddos!
With your help, I would love to be able to focus my energy on Science instruction and activities as opposed to school supplies.
Ticonderoga pencils are the best on the market and they last forever. Any amount you could give to help us get enough pencils to finish the school year would be wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to read my little proposal, and for supporting Donorschoose.org by visiting the website.
