it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders have lots of great ideas, but no way to write them down! I am privileged to teach a fun bunch of bright, inquisitive children with an incredible thirst for learning. My students ask me so many questions that I’m simultaneously excited and anxious I won’t be able to address all their questions in the short school day.
It is always a thrill for me when they want to write down their ideas, stories, or problems. From math to language arts to science and art, my happy children have used up all the pencils I purchased with my own funds, and I’ve had to beg paper from other teachers.
As a school that serves a low-income, English language learner population, we understand that student families are completely focused on subsistence, and can not provide school supplies for their children. Many of the parents work multiple, low-wage jobs just to put a roof over their heads. We provide free or low-cost breakfast and lunch to most of our students, but many students remain hungry. Out of necessity, school supplies rank low on priority list for our students’ families.
My students deserve a strong education so that they may compete and succeed in the academic arena, and in their future careers. How can they write anything down without the basic pencil and paper? It’s embarrassing, but true. Please help my students! We must equip our future generations with good educations, and that’s impossible without basic school supplies.
Your kind donation will help ensure that I may do my job, and my students may do their job. Thank you for your consideration.
