Hello. I'm a sixth-grade teacher in a public school in the South Bronx. Our school is located in a low socio-economic neighborhood, in the heart of the Hunts Point community. For the 2006-2007 school year, I will be teaching social studies to our two sixth-grade classes. Each class is composed of 31 students.
Many of the students in our sixth-grade are living in city shelters. For one reason or another, their parents are not able to afford paying rent. The mayority of our students, therefore, come to school without basic supplies. Every year, at the beginning of the school year, I buy school supplies for my students, but the supplies don't last for the entire year. Still, I try my best to provide my students with what they need to suceed in the classroom.
This year is going to be extremely difficult, however, because I will have twice the number of students as the social studies teacher for the sixth grade. My proposal is for basic school supplies. Please help me provide my students with what they need. I know this is hard to believe, but this is the reality that many children are facing.
