Do you remember what it is like to write with a pencil that is not sharpened? It is so disappointing! My Second Graders are now learning the importance of writing and using print to communicate. They become so frustrated when they have a pencil that has a dull pencil.
I have a class of twenty four students who live in North Carolina.
We are a Title One School in which many students aren't able to afford school supplies that are needed to learn and achieve academic success. We are allotted $100 dollars per teacher at our school for school supplies for the year. I have to order copier paper and construction paper with that money. I am not able to purchase pencil sharpeners simply because they are so expensive. Anything after that, I have to provide myself. Having a family of my own to support, it is hard to spend money on expensive things for my classroom.
My Project
If we are able to get these pencil sharpeners donated, my students will honestly be so excited about writing and learning in general. It is so disappointing to them that they have to write with what they have. They get so excited to write stories and work hard in school, but are just let down that I am not able to sharpen their pencils. It truly makes me feel so bad for them as their teacher, having to tell them that they will have to write the best they can. I only have the hand held pencil sharpeners that barely even work.
Enjoying school is so important to the education of our children!
It is amazing how just having pencil sharpeners in our class will make such a difference in the academic lives of my students. They are so eager to learn, they only need these simple devices to increase their learning and academic well-being.
