My Students

My Learning Support students are constantly writing, both in my resource room, and in their general education classrooms. Each day, I see each student twice: once in the morning for literacy and once in the afternoon for math. Every time a student exits my room, he or she takes a pencil.

All of the students in our school share a common handicap: poverty.

My Learning Support students are no exception. Every day, they struggle to understand their learning environments, and every day they mount this struggle without the simplest of thinking tools: a pencil. Sure, every student comes to the beginning of school with a fresh pack of pencils, but the supply ends there. In 2013-2014, our school supplied no pencils; not one. All of my students received two new pencils a day, and all of these pencils were supplied by myself, or donated as Christmas gifts by friends. I am happy to do this; it is one of the most gratifying activities I can think of. The problem is: I often can't supply enough pencils between paychecks, and the effect is devastating on my students, who require that extra little lift.

My Project

These pencils from Quill.com are perfectly strong and sharpenable. Not all pencils are quality, but these are great, for the price. In my resource room, I emphasize the need for students to automatically seek the tools available for help. Believe me when I say that pencils are the perfect tool for Learning Support students. This is because: ---students with ADHD need a focus point; pencils give focus. ---a sharp pencil allows for clearly reading and revising writing. ---pencils are the best positive token; they aid positive behaviors. ---students with pencils won't cop-out on assignments. ---a student with two good pencils can easily make a friend.

In my room, I have two industrial electric pencil sharpeners.

They are solid, safe, and reliable; I couldn't teach without them. I want my students to know that the tools in my classroom are just like my sharpeners: they are reliable, and they are safe.
