My Students
My students are Special Needs students, who live just above the cusp of the poverty line. They are excited about learning about the world around them. They are especially interested in learning about the weather system, and how it can produce storms that can destroy people's lives so easily. Although, they have a thirst for learning, they at times shy away from it, when around other students who they encounter. They want to be successful, but there are many obstacles that stand in their way of effectively doing so at this present time in their educational journey.
Many of my students have yet to bring in all or any of their school supplies at this time, due to their parents financial struggles.
The basic necessities needed for the start of a new school year are a luxury for most, as many of them reside either in a homeless or domestic violence shelter. In order for them to succeed this year in my class, they need to have this basic need of having supplies met.
My Project
These items will be used as we prepare to launch into our Social Studies unit on the American Revolutionary War. The students will be focusing on the Essential Question of "What does freedom mean?" but we will be digging deep by researching the questions under this broad umbrella by looking into the causes for the desire of freedom during this time period.
We also will be utilizing the materials such as the notebooks to use as our note taking/ research notebooks.
The folders will aid in assisting with the organization of our writing, and handouts. The notebooks will be a place where we will be making our timelines. The document reader and the stand will help with having visual models of the maps that showcase where the various battles of the war occurred in New York City.
The document reader will especially be helpful, as it accommodates the needs of the visual learners within my Special Needs classroom.
