Pen, Paper, and Poetry: Writing Our Way to Peace

Help me give my students motivational posters they can use for inspiration during class, two comfy flexible seating chairs so they can learn in a space they feel safe and comfortable, and pens and planners to complete work.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Junior and senior years of high school are jam-packed with rigorous courses and plans for the future. While both students and teachers focus on core subjects, the "fun" classes are often a second thought.

Nowadays, electives are few and far between, but they are the glue to many a scholar's well-being and the reprieve they crave during the day.

Electives are treated as an afterthought and as such, many supplies necessary to create a space for proper execution are not available. Budget cuts have hit NYC extremely hard. These cuts affect students in the Bronx at an even deeper level as we are already fighting for all the resources for our core courses. This year, my students and I are embarking on our school's first-ever Poetry elective. This project will give my students personalized journals that they will cherish and write their original poetry in. Who doesn't get excited about a new pen? The pens in this project will allow students to write freely, and they will help their thoughts flow to paper seamlessly. The posters and art will be used to decorate the classroom and surround them in the class as they brainstorm and flush out their poetry. Our students previously received donations to create a comfy corner for their relaxation as well as flex seating for some students. The bean bag and folding chair will be great new additions to our comfy area so they can take a break from their rigid seats as they let their ideas carry them away. The planners will be used by some students to organize their assignments and due dates for poetry. And lastly, the stickers will be used to decorate and personalize their journals for poetry class.
