Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember having to sit in class and stay in your seat all day? My students need a place to read and write besides their desk.

My second graders are mostly English Language Learners who love to read stories and have stories read to them, which is how many of them learn academic vocabulary needed to achieve in society.

They attend a school with limited resources but yet are very enthusiastic when it comes to participating in their own learning. Their favorite part of the day is Writer's Workshop when they get to create their own stories and include craft mimicked from published authors. My students also love Reader's Workshop, a time of day when they get to read students at their own reading level.

My Project

My students already enjoy Reader's and Writer's Workshop and adding a quiet and comfortable spot for them to peer confer and work will greatly improve their learning experience. Workshop time allows my students the time to grow as readers and writers and what better way than to offer them a special place in the classroom where they can work together.

This project is important because I want my students to see reading and writing as a continuum of growth and not just a task to complete.

Sharing these learning moments with their peers will become a learning experience in itself in that they will not only learn valuable reading and writing skills, but also important communication skills.
