Peer Mediators Getting Active!

My students need to get physically active by using outdoor equipment like a Field Day Package, Bean Bags, and Plastic Hoops to get them engaged in team building activities.

My Students

My students should be given the opportunity to take advantage of all that life has to offer. I have 160 students that are transitioning to a 21st century classroom. I would love to give them every opportunity to succeed in the classroom and the real world. I teach 7th and 8th grade Peer Mediation at a Math, Science, Technology Magnet located in CA. I have over 160 students in four classes that range from the highly gifted to ESL students.

They are highly motivated and they desire the latest in technology and resources that will get them moving and interacting inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom.

The way they want learn is by incorporating any form of physical team building activities and personal interaction. They love working in group projects and they learn best by collaborating and working together to find solutions and building relationships.

My Project

My students are leaders that are motivated and inspired to help others in conflict resolution. They discussed and decided they would love to build their communication skills, trust, and empathy by moving our classroom outside and being more physically active. The students are requesting equipment that will allow our lessons to be more active outside. They feel that the majority of their classes are inside a classroom stuck in a desk, and besides their Physical Education class, they really don't get a chance to get up and move!

Peer Mediators are role models at our school and by having these items will inspire and motivate them to build better relationships among themselves, to only then build better relationships throughout the school.

Part of our curriculum includes the students becoming the teachers, and leading the class in team building activities. Adding the Field Day equipment, Bean Bags, Plastic Hoops, and Fitness Balls to our classroom, would open countless activities our students can create and engage in. Currently we are limited to classroom resources which makes it extremely difficult to get the students up and moving together. By getting this project funded, the students will be learning, moving, teaching, and inspiring others to create a safe school environment.
