My Students
My elementary school is in central Florida. My students are five and six year old children that are beginning their formal education. They are enthusiastic to be at school and embrace very new task and skill that is introduced to them. They like to sing, play in centers, and learn all about reading and math.
We are a Title I school.
We have about 93 percent of our students that receive free or reduced-rate lunches. Most come from homes with single parents, a grandparent, or other family members are raising them. The saddest situations are where the students are in a homeless situation.
My Project
Each year I use an incubator to hatch chicken in the fall and ducks in the spring. I love nature and animals. Giving the children an opportunity to see an egg hatch gives them life long appreciation for nature and animals.
"That big ol' chick came out of that itty bitty egg?" was one of the child's comment when checking on the eggs.
The children are memorized by the whole process of the chick peeping and then working its way out of the egg. Some children were grossed out by the wet chick but most of them were making observations as were so excited!
Hatching in the classroom brings life science into math and reading. We count the eggs, days to hatch, we draw the stages of chick development and use it in writing. We read about eggs in both fiction and informational texts. This is a favorite unit of work in the classroom and it is celebrated school wide when we hatch our eggs.
