Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an amazing group of curiosity-seeking, hard-working, school-loving students. They thrive despite the challenges they face daily like growing up in an area of low economic development or learning English as their second language. Many of my students have already been identified as Gifted and Talented and they are like sponges soaking up everything they can.
Like many schools, we face budget cuts and art supplies are not considered a necessity.
Art is very important in what I do. It gives students a way to express themselves and their creativity. It's important to let students show what they are learning in different ways and projects are a way they can do that and still have fun. They love learning about artists and techniques that will make them greater creative thinkers.
My Project
We need various art supplies including paint, paintbrushes, 3-D cubes and tissue paper. We want students to be creative but quite often don't let them practice that skill. Art is the ideal way to do that! We can learn about artists like Van Gogh and Michaelangelo. We can create a painting and then write a story about it. There are so many ways to incorporate art skills into our daily instruction.
Einstein said "creativity is intelligence having fun".
Kids love to get their hands messy and to make something that is their own. Even if they struggle academically, art gives them a way to still provide answers to the questions we give. Learning is more than filling in bubbles on an assessment. By asking them to make something open-ended I can truly see if they learned the concept or not. We can paint the moon, the rainforest, the pyramids of Egypt. You may just be helping me inspire the artists of the future!
