it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are middle schoolers, grades 6-8, struggling with online remote learning during challenging times. They have shown great resilience throughout the pandemic, school closures, loss of parent jobs, illnesses, and deaths of family members (many living in the same household). They come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and each has a unique need. Despite their challenges, they show great initiative and try with what they have.
Help my students take ownership of their physical health during online remote classes when most of the day is sitting in front of a screen!
My Project
These pedometers will make a difference in my students' learning because students will be able to see their physical activity live, access their logged activity, have evidence for their sleep patterns, and set SMART goals for their physical fitness. There are multiple STEM opportunities, with biorhythms, physiology, energy balance, using digital scientific tools to make accurate measurements and recordings, tracking data, and recognizing mathematical patterns. Students will even be able to compete with classmates to reach their goals, encouraging interpersonal connections through technology.
Students will be able to use these pedometers at home and in school making it ideal for all learners, blended and fully remote, to engage in their personal physical well-being and healthy competition with peers.
One unfortunate truth about the pandemic is that students are not receiving the physical activity they usually would. They are not walking around the classroom, through the halls, or up the stairs. Instead, they are sitting all day in front of a screen. Our physical education activities are based on the honor system and many kids don't log the exercises they should be doing. Being able to monitor their own daily activity will give students ownership over their physical well-being. An added bonus will be parents being able to see their child's sleep habits (no more all-nighters playing video games to be too tired for class!)
