Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located on the Southeast side of Chicago. 92% of the students at my school are low-income, 30% are English Language learners, 15% of the students have IEPs, and 1% are homeless. My 7th grade students require exceptional education support for learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disabilities, ADHD, and other health impairments. They are respectful of one another and lend a helping hand when needed.

My students learn in a variety of ways and we are constantly modifying the classroom to create the best learning environment for them and addresses their unique needs.

We know that every student has their own learning style and some thrive in environments that may not be conventional. It is one of my jobs as their teacher to help find the best ways in which they learn and set them up to be as successful as they can be. Together, the students and I explore different ways to make this possible and I do what I can to create a ideal learning environment for all. This also helps the students become more aware of their own learning needs and they are developing self advocacy skills that will serve them well outside the classroom.

My Project

My middle school students are full of energy and some struggle to stay focused during class instruction. Some of my students do not like to stay seated at their desks throughout the day and prefer many different seating options. I have cushion kneelers for students who prefer to kneel on the ground next to their desks and a standing desk for those who do better on their feet. The majority of my students do best when movement breaks are offered periodically throughout the day.

A bike desk will provide another seating option for the students in my class, allowing them to expel some of their excess energy, and provide an opportunity for exercise.

With the weather getting colder, the opportunities to go outside for recess are limited and my students are really missing this release. Having the option available in the classroom would be very beneficial for my students and allow them the movement breaks they need while staying focused and attentive in class.

Not only will a bike desk improve their learning environment, it will also address the health and wellness needs of the students in my class.
