Imagine learning social studies with students who need to be moving to learn. They tap pencils, shake legs, and get up to walk around. This movement and noise can be very distracting.
Because most students attending my school are impoverished, we are categorized as a Title I institution.
Despite having difficult home environments, I find my students are eager to learn. They are challenged with ADHD disorders, so they need an outlet to channel the extra energy.
My Project
Studies show that students learn best while moving. Moving increases oxygen intake and blood flow, which benefits brain cell activity. My students will use this new furniture to focus their excessive amount of energy on pedaling instead of distracting others.
Donations to my pedal desk project will impact my classroom greatly.
Once students start using these desks I will see a shift in behavior and student engagement. Students with behavior problems will focus the need to move on their legs instead of distracting others. Tapping will no longer be a behavior issue and students will find themselves more focused on writing and learning.
