This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At Pickens, we serve a uniquely motivated group of students from urban, suburban, rural, refugee, and immigrant communities. Many of our learners come to us with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and traditional school models have not always supported their success. Our concurrent enrollment program, which serves everyone from high school students to veterans, focuses on developing both career/technical skills, durable skills, and English language proficiency. Students are highly motivated to pursue high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers, but balancing competing priorities can make their academic journey challenging. Our students are hands-on, conceptual, creative learners who thrive when given opportunities to move, build, and demonstrate their learning in new ways.

Using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitation structures and practices will make a transformational difference in our classrooms.

Incorporating play into instruction allows students—especially multilingual learners newer to English—to engage deeply in problem-solving, creativity, and academic discourse. As the instructional coach supporting over 29 career and technical education pathways, I need multiple sets of LEGO® materials to give many classes the chance to experience these innovative learning strategies at the same time. These tools will provide differentiated opportunities for students to show what they know and build essential communication skills. By bringing creativity and movement into our teaching practices, we will support our students in ways traditional methods often cannot, helping them grow into confident, career-ready individuals.
