Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am teaching ENL at one of the District 75 schools in Bronx. I teach three students at a time to provide ENL to the students with autism. Many of them are nonverbal so I use PECS (Picture Exchange System) and all the pictures have to be laminated.
Our school is a model school in district 75 and we are making a difference every day.
All of my students have autism and they are learning every day. Due to their disabilities, they need more support from the teachers. Many of them have poor fine or gross motor skill so the pictures need to be laminated. I am teaching ELLs and I am teaching 31 students who each have their own unique needs. It is a challenge to teach them in two different sites and organize the pictures for PECS and carry my teaching materials.
My Project
My students will use the laminated pictures to communicate with their peers and teachers throughout the day - It is their voice. Some of the students have their own devices but many of them do not have their own. In order for them to have meaningful instruction, they need to carry their small binders with the picture symbols so they can request something they need. They can use it during breakfast and lunch to request their preferred meal. They can ask teachers to give them water, go to bathroom and much more.
If I receive the supplies requested to create, prepare, and laminate all the picture symbols my students need, it will allow my students to have clean picture symbols (the symbols easily get dirty and wear out after a while since they use them all day, even in the cafeteria).
These sets of laminated pictures will help them to communicate with other people more effectively.
