This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am in a new position at a new school this year. I’m leading a preschool autism class. So far, we have four students. A few of my students use assistive technology devices with text-to-speech apps to communicate. The other students use signs, gestures, and pictures.
I'm requesting a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) starter kit that includes picture icons and a small durable binder to attach the icons to, as well as a second PECS book to use with my non-verbal communicators for hands-on activities.
Using PECS helps students become independent by effectively communicating their wants and needs. This project has real-world applications as communication is part of daily life.
