This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As part of our fourth grade social studies curriculum, our students are taking a deep dive into learning about Native American life in New York.
The students have been learning about the lives of Iroquois, Algonquin, and Lenape Native Americans prior to the arrival of Europeans in the Americans.
We look at each lesson as a celebration of culture and love reading fictional and nonfictional texts about Native life. One of our favorite texts this year was Hiawatha and the Peacemaker, which inspired us to find the next read aloud, Peacemaker.
This is a story about triumph, adventure, and above all, peace, all told through the eyes of a young Native American boy living in New York many years ago. By contributing to our project, you are helping fund a class set of these texts for us to read together and learn more about Native American life through fictional texts.
