My Project
The pillows and sensory tools that I am requesting for my students already have a space waiting for them! We have a small carpet in the dance classroom where students go to reset and regulate their emotions and behavior. Students have access to a variety of items here that include books about dance, mindfulness cards, breathing spheres, coloring sheets and one small pillow.
We need your help getting large pillows, mindfulness books, and sensory tools into the calming area of our dance classroom so it will be more comfortable, inclusive and nourishing for students.
Our classroom does not have walls - we use dividers to enclose the room. The pillows will be placed on our small carpet, against the dividers so students can lean back and take a break. The pillows can also be moved around the room easily for students that struggle in a space with no desks or chairs. The I Am Books and sensory toys will be added to our corner library. The visual timer will allow students to know how much time they have left in the calm area, which will help them consciously return to whole class activities. Students generally take a 2-5 minute break before returning to their spot ready to dance and learn.
There is often background noise from other classes in addition to the noise we create while dancing, playing music, and collaborating during class. The noise reduction headphones will support students that are sound sensitive as well as those that experience sensory overload.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students participation and demeanor, especially when they are experiencing big emotions or overwhelm. I hope that providing them with an intentional reset space will allow students to develop their emotional accountability, self-determination and self-control.
