Peaceable Kingdom Masks: Art, Social Studies And Lang. Arts
My students need 14 art materials to create animal masks in a cross-curricular art, social studies, and language arts integrated unit.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Kenny's classroom raised $381
This project is fully funded
My Students
Why do people in different cultures wear animal masks to celebrate certain events? Students will design and create animal masks inspired by animal characteristics. Students will visually interpret and re-enact animal stories and folktales from around the world.
Our students are very interested in our active arts program.
State budget cuts have decreased funding for a variety of art supplies for exciting, meaningful projects. The end of the school year is a time where student interest begins to fade. This cross-curricular activity will hold their interest at the end of the school year while they are actively engaged in an integrated art project along with learning about social studies and using language arts and writing skills in a meaningful way. This project will not only hold their attention but will be the way that we motivate our students to work hard this summer with their summer reading goals, using the masks and stories in a kick-off assembly while introducing the summer reading theme "Reading is Wild!"
My Project
Cultures from around the world and throughout time have told vivid animal stories. Ascribing emotions and motivations to animals is a way for humans to better understand themselves. Children love to hear these stories, drinking in their rich imagery and identifying with the feelings they conjure. They also love to tell such stories, especially when they're dressed for the part! Students will embellish expressive animal masks with simple, colorful materials. Students will not only create their masks in art class, they will extend the lesson back in their classrooms by writing a description of the animal or a short story, poem, or play about it. They will read and perform native stories, folktales, and legends about animals while learning the history of the culture from which the masks originate.
This project will help students to see connections across the content area as well as keep them actively engaged at the end of the year.
They will be presenting their projects to their parents and perform their stories along with their masks that they create. This project will be a culminating learning activity to give students a meaningful way to kick off our summer reading program and get the students excited to read this summer.
