My students need supplies, including glue, mod podge, key rings, glitter and wire, to turn #6 plastic take out boxes into earrings. Shapes will be cut from the plastic and baked (like Shrinky Dinks), then glittered and wired.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are second language learners, new to the USA. They have arrived at our urban school from artistically rich and vibrant cultures half way around the globe. Our 100+ year old school, located in an inner city, lacks many of the modern bells and whistles that today's schools take for granted.

"Glitter is my favorite color," said one of my students recently.

I wasn't going to argue. I understand it. Due to language barriers, my students often struggle to find the right word to describe something. However, I don't need the perfect word to see the girls in my club love anything sparkly, shiny, and colorful. My students are happy, excited, and enthusiastic learners. Every week, in our Jewelry Club, we begin a new project. Although the projects are always different, one thing remains the same: we use recycled or re-purposed materials as one component....and the girls love that! have opened their eyes to completely new ways of looking at everyday objects.

My Project

We are requesting glue, glitter, stencils, and earring making components. We are going to use #6 plastic takeout containers and cut different shapes from the material. Once baked, this plastic responds just like a Shrinky Dink. The plastic shrinks approximately one third in size and becomes harder and thicker. Once "cooked" the girls can coat the plastic with the requested glitters, and seal. My students will learn another lesson in being environmentally friendly. They will learn a skill that may help them earn extra income. By wearing their formerly trash-to-treasure creations, they can further educate people they encounter about the importance of preserving our environment.

Special, and meaningful, projects like this are not in our budget.

This project would not be possible without the kindness and generosity of the Donorschoose community. Help my students spread the word about our environmentally friendly practices. We'd like to start with you. We will include a pair of earrings to each individual that donates to our project!
