My students need equipment for our physical education class: 2 each of team walkers, bowling sets, catch and balance band sets, parachutes, playground balls, and footballs; 3 sets of cones; stepping stone exercise cards; 12 speed ropes; and bean bags.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am thrilled and excited to be starting a new year at a new school! I cannot express my excitement when our principal announced in our first staff meeting of the year that she wanted the students to get at least 30 minutes of P.E. each week. I have not been able to teach P.E. in 9 years!
This is my first year at a new school with a student population that ranges from Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade.
The school is in a very rural area several miles outside of the city limits. There is not much around us besides a whole lot of desert!
The socioeconomic status of most of the families at my school is in the lower-middle-class to lower-class spectrum. We have an enrollment of approximately 600 students at our school.
Although I have only been a part of this community for two weeks now, I can already feel how invested all of the teachers and parents are in giving these students their best shot at a great education. The level of commitment to learning is amazing. I am very excited by all of the opportunities that this school year holds.
My Project
Having been given the green light to go ahead and teach P.E. weekly, my first step was to Google elementary P.E. lessons. My next step was to start thinking about materials. I am requesting team walkers, bowling sets, catch and balance band sets, parachutes, playground balls, footballs, cones, stepping stone exercise cards, speed ropes, and bean bags.
All of the materials requested for this project will enable me to develop a year's worth of physical education lessons for my students that will build their physical stamina and strength, while also building their self-esteem and cooperative learning skills. When done right in the elementary classroom, there is no better way to build a sense of community than to develop hands-on activities that bring the students together and help them to experience a sense of accomplishment. Improved physical fitness and awareness of how important physical activity is for the body is another bonus to teaching P.E.
We live in a world that is becoming increasingly sedentary.
Mobile phones, tablets, computers, and video games are everywhere we turn. Our children know how to Face Time by the time they are three years old. While there is nothing wrong with this, we also have to remember to make time for physical fitness and good old-fashioned fun, like relay races and touch football. We need to teach our children the importance of exercise and maintaining a fit body.
