Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple miles away from USC (go Trojans!) We are Title 1 school with about 100% of our students coming from low-income families. Almost all of our students are minority students and English Learners.
We are a Transitional Kindergarten - 2nd grade classroom.
My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Students with autism face challenges with social skills, nonverbal and verbal communication, and may exhibit challenging behaviors.
My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom.
Our students come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different likes/dislikes and needs but in our room, we are all learners. Each day opens us to new experiences and adventures. Our days together are never the same. Their learning differences and remarkable characteristic traits are exactly what make them so special.
My Project
My students do not currently have the proper P.E. equipment that they need. We need P.E. equipment and games that will help build coordination and collaboration. Exercise helps all children, especially children with autism, coordination, endurance, strength and their overall health.
I envision my students up and running playing sports games together such as soccer with pop soccer nets, bouncing playground balls, playing frisbee, and basketball.
These activities will provide the students opportunities to be active and practice their motor skills while simultaneously working on their social skills. (Shh, us teachers love cross-curricular activities and when students are learning while having fun.)
