Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class has two computers. Through Donors Choose, we acquired an HP All-in-One desktop. Its speed, ease of use, and amazing screen quality are incredible. It's mesmerizing! Then we have 'the white one' that, when not frozen, is as swift as molasses. No one, including me, wants to get stuck on it.
I have two classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Technology Standards are part of the Pre-Kindergarten curriculum. Children are expected to achieve basic computer skills by year's end and some, due in part to previous experience, already have. It would be great to take advantage of my technologically savvy students by pairing them with the novices at side-by-side computers. In addition to building their technical proficiency, cooperative learning offers additional benefits.
My Project
The HP All-In-One desktop we currently have has allowed my students to practice skills addressed in our Pre-K Technology Standards. They are developing dexterity with the mouse, becoming familiar with the keyboard, and learning how to open and close programs. Another functional computer in our classroom would make it possible for two children to work cooperatively to model skills and provide encouragement. It would also reduce the frequency of calls for 'tech support' that require me to suspend my small group lessons and restart 'the white one' again.
Cooperative learning stimulates critical thinking and the development of diverse problem-solving strategies. It also creates an environment of interactive exploration that encourages children to begin taking responsibility for their learning.
My students' access to technology is necessary for the achievement of grade level standards.
An HP All-In-One computer will provide a wealth of opportunities and resources for learning and practice in all curricular areas. It will facilitate cooperation between students to further their technical abilities as well as enhance their overall academic achievement. Finally, it is my hope that some new friendships will be forged and pals are always a plus!
