Patricia Polacco Appeals to Primary Readers

My students need 42 wonderful books, all by native-to-Michigan author, Patricia Polacco.

I have the honor of teaching second graders at a successful school in a struggling neighborhood, in a deep-in-debt city in Michigan. Although times are tough and my students' families are struggling financially, our focus is on all that can go right. Our students CAN and DO learn and they are making great strides! We are all very proud of them and continue to seek ways to foster their learning and growth no matter what the circumstances may be.

Patricia Polacco is one of my favorite children's authors. Most students have never heard of her when they begin second grade with me. However, she has written so many fabulous stories, that once exposed, my students seek to read other titles that she has written. One of the most endearing traits of her stories is how very personal they are. She tends to write from her own experiences and young readers can relate to the events/issues in the stories or they are extended to understand other cultures or periods through them. Ms. Polacco's stories inspire my students to write from the heart about personal experiences with description and detail thus enhancing their own writing. Her illustrations are captivating and descriptive, whether they are showing the frustration of a young child who is struggling to read or the excitement of a meteor landing in one's own backyard. The ONLY problem is that the school/district is not able to buy literature for our classrooms at this time and such quality titles are not inexpensive and can rarely be found at a bargain used book sale when I shop with my own funds.

Over the years, I've bought a number of Ms. Polacco's books, but I am seeking your help to add many more of them to our classroom library. We are asking for just one copy (paperback when available) of many different titles. They make for great 'teacher read-alouds' but as the children progress in reading, they will read more of these books with partners or independently. Our school uses the Accelerated Reading program, in which the children read a book and then take a quiz on the computer, and many of these titles have an accompanying quiz.

With your support, I can expand my students' exposure to this wonderful author. Though recognized as one of the nation's top children's authors, Ms. Polacco is frank and honest as she shares how she struggled with a learning disability as a child. Many of her stories are based on her life in Michigan. It is very exciting for young students to read stories that happened in their own state. I have bargain-shopped this summer and managed to buy my students everything from glue and crayons to spirals and folders, but these wonderful titles are just beyond my means. With your help, my students can have a classroom library rich with words of wonder and wisdom. Thank you for your kind consideration.
