My Students
Do you remember the first day of history class? Were you scared of the boredom? In my class, we flip the script on how history is traditionally taught and put students in charge of their own learning. History is a story they have to learn to tell and build upon through creation and teamwork.
Students at our school often attend while facing critical challenges at home and in the community.
Many students attend because of the inspiration and challenge provided in our classrooms, as well as the relationships that we are able to build. Increasing technology opens new doors every day.
Students at this urban school in Missouri are driven to succeed. When placed in a challenging, tech-savvy classroom, they have shown the ability and drive to create projects that are both interesting and helpful to the community which our school serves. Students have been through challenges themselves, and many have a great desire to give back to the community by conducting projects that are real and meaningful. Unfortunately, a lack of access to basic school materials makes it more difficult to plan and carry out these projects. We're still doing amazing things every day, but with recent budget cuts, we could use some help!
My Project
In a traditional school setting, students would be expected to arrive with their own basic tools for success such as pens, erasers, sticky notes, and more. Our urban school in Missouri has recently experienced budget cuts that have seen our department budgets slashed to a scary level. The basic school supplies that are provided in this project help to free up what little we have in the budget for a field trip the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial. While it may not seem like your donation is affecting those bigger-picture activities, it is!
The second part of this project is a set of headphones, SD cards and two SD card readers. My kids create on their individual laptops daily. The biggest issue right now is file sharing. While sites like Google Classroom and Moodle are great for basic word document sharing, video and audio files often need some extra space, so SD cards that I can loan out to students will fill an important void in our technology toolbox.
Students at our school are some of the most dedicated, passionate students out there.
They learn despite hardships that would have broken me years ago. It is mind-numbingly frustrating to see a student who desperately wants to learn hindered or slowed because of the lack of something as simple as a sharp pencil, a staple, or something to write with during class. Often projects ask for an entire boat, so to speak. I have a boat; it just has some holes in it. I need help patching those holes!
