In the past I used to assess students knowledge of the assigned reading through pop quizzes and cumulative exams. Then I gave those up after distance learning and the move towards technology integration. However, after the return to campus theres been far too much dependency on technology, particularly when it comes cellular devices. It wasn't until recently that I found a good replacement and that has been competitive game show style quizzes.
Through these competitive quizzes students have been wanting to complete their assigned readings so they can win prizes, and it has been so fun to see as their teachers.
I have these recordable buzzers that I've been using until late but when students get passionate about the competition it is very challenging to piece out which buzzer I heard. The buzzers in this project will have a number assigned to them that will wirelessly transmit to the display so we have an accurate reading of which group "buzzed" in.
My students suggested looking into Kahoot or another phone app, but I try to create an environment where students aren't on their phones as much. Therefore, I don't want to go down that path. All of my students (and I mean ALL) have been so engaged and participating 100% during these quizzes. If I were to turn to an app I just know my participation would likely be cut in half - it too tempting to just do a quick scroll. I'd really love to have these game buzzers so I can provide my students with an equitable way to participate in our game show style competitions without their phones.
